Hey, everyone. This is Dr. George Birnbach, and today, I wanna talk about labels and the reason why is because labels can destroy any fear’s emotional power over us.

Take for instance a marketing program that you’re nervous about. It might be giving a talk in front of a bunch of people, right? Maybe it’s your first time out there, and you’re nervous about it. Well if you sit and you dwell on it, you’ll quickly spin up into an anxiety frenzy, and you’ll probably stammer through a terrible opening, and you’ll stumble through an ineffective close. But if we can take a step back and label the event differently, it’s just a talk with the women’s group who I can help. It takes away much of the fear. That’s how labels work. Learn to use the it’s just label, right? It’s just inviting people to come into my office is easier to deal with than, I have to close my talk better, or my talk’s gonna be a waste. You see? Or I don’t know how to ask for an appointment.

You see, thinking of anxiety around something like hiring an associate doctor, there’s a lot of fear, because we want it to go well, and there are people’s lives at stake, but there are so many unknowns that it’s easy to spiral into a fear pattern. So let’s relabel it. I’m giving someone an opportunity to have a pretty spectacular career. I’ll give them guidance, and they just have to do the work. If they do their part, well, we both win. You see, if they don’t, we’ll just pivot and course correct. Now there are two labels in there. We’re just giving someone a great career, and if they don’t do their job, we’ll just pivot. We’re taking away the fear and dropping it into something logical.

So before getting trapped in your mind, say out loud, even if you’re the only one in the room, what you’re concerned about, and then give it a label as something more fundamental. If you start to feel yourself winding up again, step back, get grounded, and try a different label.

You see, I promise you this. If you can’t break free of the fear through labeling, there’s a good chance that you’re not grounded in a model of action or a model of decision-making and if that’s the case, call me, because I’ve got a super quick solution for that, all right?

But until then, let’s just try using the it’s just label. It’s just this, it’s just that, and it’s just fill in the blank. I’m certain it will ease your fear and help you move forward.
